There’s a critical battleground in the war for Family Dollar Stores Inc.: store closures.
Dollar Tree Inc. had a message for its competitor Dollar General Corp.DG -1.19%, the retailer seeking to upend its accepted $8.5 billion offer for Family Dollar: The Federal Trade Commission will force you to close too many stores to make the deal work.
Dollar Tree, in a press release, said that Dollar General’s $9.1 billion hostile bid for Family Dollar, “may ultimately fail” because the FTC may demand that the divestiture of more stores to get the merger done than the 1,500 Dollar General has proposed. Or, it argues, regulators may simply block the deal entirely.
